Online Big Stakes Poker- Who is Gus Hansen?

Gus Hansen enjoyed a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only one to make it to the closing poker table in three of the competitions. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen raked in a massive pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has earned many televised poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the greatest enthusiasts anywhere in the world. While competing in online poker, another side of Hansen has appeared. Gus frequently competes in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen usually buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very weak. He waits for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I believe Gus is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the everyday players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is flat broke, he has absolutely no reason to sit at the game with the min buy-in.

Buying in for the min takes almost all of the ability out of big stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be 1 of the best players in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full amount. I think television can skew our perception of the real world at times. The greatest poker players in the world may be players you have won’t have heard of. Gus can be found participating in web poker on Full Tilt. He normally plays in big stakes omaha high and texas holdem. Gus has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his abilities in cash rounds?
