Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The real improvement in his abilities happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would often challenge each other. He was able to access some of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL holdem.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
