Gaming chips have been manufactured from a varied selection of materials in an almost endless selection of styles since the advent of gambling and the need to keep an eye on winnings. The most common components used at present in the creation of cutting-edge poker chips are plastic, clay composite, and acrylics. Clay chips, the primary of the bunch, have been made in America since the late 19th century.

Back in the 19th century, poker enthusiasts seemed to use any small object with value you can imagine. Early poker players occasionally used rough gold pieces as well as chips – mainly manufactured of wood and clay. By the 20th century, poker chip designs started to enjoy a bigger prominence, and the smooth sides of older chips were given up to chips with engraved slits to hold them neatly stacked with each other.

There is little debate that poker has increased constantly in appeal since its origin in the 19th century. With the explosive increase of online gambling and unique TV shows, public interest in poker has feed the fire faster than ever before. Many people are first introduced to poker by television showssuch as Bravo’s "Celebrity Poker Showdown" or "Poker After Dark," and most will wager on their first hands online. Despite internet poker’s rise, nothing replaces the feeling of holding weighty poker chips in your hand, throwing chips into the middle of a poker table, or stacking high pilesstacks of chips after displaying a winning hand.
