Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lost most times. He made some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. The real advancement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often compete against one another. He had access into some of the best minds in chess. He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
